Lab 8 Reflection

In Lab 8 we created a flash talk page, which was essentially a webpage with a playable video. The first thing we did was pick a topic to research from a list of topics. These topics dealt with things such as hacking, net neutrality, and Internet censorship. I chose to research TCP/IP and DNS hacking. After we chose a topic we had to research it. The research included the negative aspects and positive aspects of the subject as well as connections we can make to what we learned so far and the new things we learned from the research. The research was conducted online with Wikipedia being used as only one source and other sources being credible and noted down. After all the facts were written down we had to compile a script for the video. The scripts was to be 300 words so that the video could be 2 minutes long. To make the scripts I made 3-4 sections focusing on different aspects of my research. For example, the first part of my script was dedicated to explaining what the issue was and in the second I went more in depth about an aspect of the issue.
Once the script was written it came time to shooting the video. This was done through photo booth. To make sure the video could be inserted into our html file and be playable we needed to make sure the video was saved as an .mp4 file. Photo booth saved our video as a .mov so we put our .mov file in a software that converts video files and had it converted to a .mp4. After the files were settled it came time to inserting the actual video into the webpage. We did this using a new tag in HTML, the <video> tag. Within the tag we could change aspects such as height and control and most importantly tell the page where to look for the video file with the <source> tag. Finally, it was a mtter of saving, uploading, and playing the video in the browser.
These skills are important for a web designer since these skills enable a web designer utilize video media in their sites. Some websites are enhanced with the inclusion of a video that does something such as explaining what the site is about or giving a video update about a company's latest products. Knowing how to insert videos allow you to put more than words on a website and still images on a website and enhance the user experience.
